How is working at LUU helping prepare you for your future career / Has your work helped to influence your career ambitions?
I am currently employed as a part-time HR assistant in the People team at LUU. This role is preparing me for my future career because I can apply what I am being taught to reality, subsequently increasing the understanding of my degree and what to expect working in HR. This experience is enhancing the hard and soft skills required to excel in any HR role I choose to pursue. The tasks I am undertaking are influencing my career ambitions because I can tailor my skills to a branch of HR I would like to specialise in when I graduate.
What skills has your LUU role helped you to develop that will be useful in securing your future career?
At LUU, I have been developing my communication, data gathering and analytical skills. In the people profession, there is a heavy reliance on evidence-led decision making, which includes gathering and interpreting information to help senior management make the best decisions for an organisation. Through the skills I am acquiring and enhancing, this will give me the distinctive edge I require in the competitive market, because I have proven experience demonstrating these skills.
What is it like balancing work and study/research?
It can be challenging at times, but what has worked for me is planning my diary and ensuring there are no clashes. In addition, my line manager is very supportive and allows me to tailor my working hours around my studies.
What drew you to work part-time at LUU instead of elsewhere?
I was very interested in the values held by LUU and that attracted me to the role. Additionally, I was interested because I knew that my work would contribute to the wider student body, (even in a minute way) and I would be working in an environment I am familiar with!
What is your favourite part of your role?
I enjoy working with the members of my team and the autonomy that comes with my role, I can be creative and innovative.
What would you say to students thinking about applying to an LUU job?
Just do it! Working at LUU will enable you to interact with a greater pool of people, have fun and gather lots of experience for your future.
