Our Impact

How we're helping students love their time at Leeds
Communicating LUU's impact
Leeds University Union exists to help students love their time at Leeds. It’s a broad mission, encompassing everything from student support and activities, to jobs and value for money in our shops, bars and cafes.
We work hard every day to ensure that we’re having a positive impact on our students, but with 38,000 members of LUU, we want to do more to make sure that all of our members understand the things we offer students that help enjoy and benefit from their time here.
Alongside our campus-wide data collection like the Tell It Like It Is survey, smaller questionnaires and focus groups, we’ve been speaking to students involved in LUU in various ways about their experiences with the Union. We’ll be expanding this page over time as we build up our case studies in order of your priorities (as established in the Tell It Like It Is findings), to highlight the ways we’ve supported students already – and how we can do the same for you.

Employing students at LUU
Historically 75% of our staff at any one time are students. Hear from some of them in this video.
We know the importance of part time work for many students, and take great pride in employing our own fantastic students at the Union, whether that’s in our outlets, or in support roles within office teams. Our flexible roles help students earn as they learn, and student staff perspectives are invaluable in helping us deliver for students more widely.
Loads of our permanent staff team are also Leeds alumni, part time students or recent graduates, who are kickstarting their careers with us here at LUU. One of those is Jody Wong, our brilliant Data and Insight Coordinator who graduated in 2021.
Meanwhile, Princess Okpara and Megan Hancock are working in LUU’s office teams while studying at the same time. We spoke to them about the benefits of working at LUU as a student here at Leeds.
Our student staff have many different backgrounds, and Katie Gleeson was a full-time LUU staff member before going part-time and pursuing her Masters.
Ubaid Abrar recently graduated from his MBA, during which he worked in LUU’s Co-op store. Now a Business Consultant, he shared his inspirational story with us, and told us why he thinks international students should pursue part-time work through LUU.
Joblink, our very own jobs agency, also does wonderful work connecting students with roles that work for them, from regular part time jobs, to internships and summer jobs.
We spoke to Ersin Arif, whose experience with Joblink as a student propelled him to impressive career success, soon after graduation. Read his story and discover how Joblink could give you a career boost below.
Harnessing student talent
In addition to student employment opportunities via LUU and Joblink, we also love to involve students in our campaigns and operations throughout the year. From bringing on board student designers for major projects including the Fresh Start Festival and Partnership Awards, to trialling an app developed by a second year student, we’re all about supporting our students’ talent and innovation, and providing a platform for it to shine. Could you be next?
