In 2019, the Union supermarket Essentials will become a Co-op franchise.

Your shelves will be filled with plenty more products and brands, with more value options and speedier queues at the self-service check-outs.

Just can't wait?

Whilst your new Co-op is getting ready, they've got a pop up between Common Ground and Union Square sorting you out with your lunchtime sandwich, mid-afternoon snacks and the classic pint of milk.

Totum card holders get an extra 10% off at the tills.

We're answering anything you may have asked here. If your question isn't covered, tell us here and we'll get back to you below.

Of course, there'll be a wide selection of ready made pasta pots and salads you can scoop up on the go.

Yes, it's staying in Co-op and yep, it'll still be £1.

Co-op will not sell stationery, however LUU will open a new outlet. From here we'll be selling all the non-food items you found in Essentials such as stationary and art supplies, cards and gifts, and electrical items. It's also where you'll be able to purchase your Fruity ticket and you'll find our click and collect services. With immediate effect this store will be located in the unit opposite Santander, it's location might move in the future but we'll keep you posted.

Ensuring there are student jobs is still a main priority for LUU and we won't be reducing the number of student roles in the new Co-op store. We're partnering with Co-op and the Franchise model means students will still work for LUU.

The Urban Eat range will still be available from Common Ground. We know many students and staff enjoy the vegan and vegetarian sandwiches/wraps that they provide.

Co-op have a meal deal option priced at £3.50.

We did sell a lot of Co-op products due to our supply chain running through NUS. We'll now have a Co-op franchise in LUU rather than just stocking the products.

There will be changes to the product selection but we're positive that these will be for the better. There will be a much greater variety on offer. If there's still something we don't stock, please let us know.

You'll be able to get your sandwich Meal Deal from Salad Box and Balcony and we'll be opening up a temporary Co-op Pop-up store in Union Square on Level -1.

Essentials has been declining in profitability in previous years with increases in costs and our ageing technology. Given student interest in providing value for money, two years ago, we explored partnering with national retailers. We found partners that would work in a transactional sense, but wouldn’t provide student employment opportunities or weren’t aligned with our ethics. We chose to partner with Co-op due to their product range, ethical standpoint, value for money and contribution to the communities they operate in. Importantly, The Co-op franchise will still be managed by LUU and run by LUU staff and members.

There won't be a Self Service post office within the Co-op, however within the new LUU outlet our Collect Plus parcel service will continue.

Yes, with an even bigger range.

We'll be using the Co-op supply chain, but they do have local producers on their list.
