“It’s a great time to get together as a team and play some friendly rivalry matches. Other students should attend as it’s such a good opportunity to see sports matches. It also means the world to the athletes to see people coming together to provide support.” – Lucy
How do you think it will feel like to be out there at Varsity, watched and supported by hundreds of students?
“It will be so amazing to play at Varsity. I think it will be a bit nerve-racking, but it will be such a fun day. Watching other teams and playing will be such a cool experience.” – Lucy
“I think it will feel very surreal and be a very special experience.” – Munch
What do you think is the biggest challenge for women in hockey, and how do you believe the sport can continue to grow and gain more recognition?
“I think the biggest challenge for women in sport is injury. Sports injuries are more common for women than men. Treatment and prevention are less researched.
Partaking in university-wide events like varsity is a great way for hockey to grow as a sport.” – Caitlin
“I think the biggest challenge for us is when we lose. It can be difficult to keep morale up during the matches when we aren’t playing our best.” – Lucy

“Balancing hockey and Uni work can sometimes be tough but I love the sport and my team. The fun we have together makes it all worthwhile.” – Lucy
“You must be organised to be a student-athlete. If I had to choose, enjoying the sport and winning are my main motivators.” – Caitlin
Let’s talk about your team! How do you foster an inclusive environment where everyone feels supported and included?
“Being approachable and friendly is a great way to foster an inclusive environment.” – Caitlin
“I always ensure everyone has a say on and off the pitch. Everyone’s voice is heard equally. Since our team is such close friends, it feels easy to support one another in every way.” – Lucy
”We are a friendly and supportive group. We also ensure the team knows they are supported by our committee and can reach out to them for anything.” – Abigail
Why is it important to have access to sports clubs at the University? How has it enhanced your student experience?
“The opportunity to be involved in sport has enhanced my student experience as I have made lifelong friends. It has also provided me with the opportunity to be on a committee, which has allowed me to develop lots of skills.” – Abigail
“Sport at university is a great way to make friends and develop confidence and time management skills.” – Caitlin
“I think that without hockey I would not have made half of the friends I have today. Being in a sports team is such an easy way to meet people, and when you’re in a big team, it is simple to find your people.
I have also gained skills such as public speaking, inspiring my team even when I am feeling down, and chatting to people I do not know. and have improved my organisation skills, which allows me to be prepared for anything.” – Lucy
