Tell us what Varsity means to you!
“Varsity is always one of the highlights of the year for me. As it is the last fixture in the calendar for our team, the chance to play alongside friends for the final time adds to the significance of the event. The support we receive every year makes the occasion even more special.” -Joe
How do you think it will feel to be out there on the pitch at Varsity, watched and supported by hundreds of students?
“It gives you a real sense of gratitude and belonging. To have so many people support the team makes you even prouder to put on the jersey. It inspires you to perform for both the team and the crowd.” -Joe
Let’s talk about your team! How do you foster an inclusive environment where everyone feels supported and valued?
“We encourage all players to get involved with the club both on and off the pitch. As a group, we all make sure to look out for each other, and older players will often take time out of their day to mentor younger players. We keep in contact not only through our frequent training sessions and club events but also by checking in on each other when we can. We have a very strong team ethos and will support our members through all aspects of life. This means that every player feels part of the club.” -Joe
Let’s talk about what it’s like to be a student-athlete! How do you balance it all? What motivates you?
“Academics and sports societies help create a routine. Our socials and sporting activities work in tandem to provide a mental break, giving us an allotted time to relax and enjoy time with friends.
Working as a team allows us to motivate one another towards collective goals and support each other when stresses build, whether that be related to university or rugby.” -Toby
Why is it important to have access to sports clubs at the University? How has it enhanced your student experience?
“Having access to sports societies provides an escape from regular uni life and creates a sense of belonging, which is important, especially at the start of anyone’s uni journey.
Over the years, I’ve experienced many wins and losses and met many people from all walks of life. Rugby has helped enrich my life and university experience. It has taught me the value of support networks and made me more confident both on and off the pitch.” -Toby
