Immerse Yourself In Culture at World Unite Fest

The World Unite Festival (WU Fest) is back, and it’s packed with culture-centered events and activities, from fun parties to useful skills. There’s also another important campaign running alongside it, called Learning Together: Anti-Racism, Bias and Diversity. With the variety of events, we hope you take the opportunity to immerse yourself in the diverse culture of Leeds and open your mind to the various perspectives and voices of the world around us.

The mission of WU Fest is to celebrate the diversity of Leeds. With activities like board games and cultural quizzes, sketch club and writing sessions, traditional clothing and food, languages, talks and workshops, the programme is packed with fun and educational opportunities to make this week at Leeds more exciting.

WU Fest is a campaign that wouldn’t be possible without student participation, and we are thankful to every society and individual who has gotten involved to share their culture with fellow students. For example, for this instalment of WU Fest, Big Open Party is collaborating with the BSL Society to host an interactive British sign language session, while the Japanese Society is holding an origami workshop in collaboration with EARS society. There will be dance with Tamil Society, yoga with SolidariTee, and a whole goulash party with LUU Hungarian Society. You can also enjoy an Avurudu celebration with Sri Lankan Society, and an evening of Kirtan with Leeds Sikh Society. And, of course, you’ll see plenty of students performing at the Show Of Unity.

With more than 9000 students getting involved in the Winter WU Fest last November, we can’t wait to see how many of you will get the most of it this week!

As part of the World Unite Festival, Liberate LUU is bringing to you a series of free events to make you a knowledgeable and confident advocate – Learning Together: Anti-Racism, Bias and Diversity. With three workshops and talks around racism, harassment, media bias, fake news, and more, this campaign is sure to open your mind and spark important conversations.

If you haven’t heard of Liberate LUU yet, head over there now – it’s a place of events, campaigns, news and support for you and your community. You’ll find tailored resources for Black, LGBTQ+, Trans, Women’s, Disabled, Working Class, and Asian Liberation, as well as events and opportunities for everyone. Be educated, be supported, be empowered. You can make a difference to your community and the wider society, and that starts with a curious mind, meaningful conversations and actions that broaden your horizon.
