Meet the Varsity Captains: Zeeshan Alam, Badminton

Varsity, the major annual sports event between the University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett, is returning from 27 April  – 4 May after two years off. The high-energy week will see over 60 fixtures across 25 sports, and involving more than 1,400 student competitors.

In the lead-up, we’re speaking to some of the team captains about their sport, players to watch, and how they’re feeling in the run up to this major event. Today we spoke to Zeeshan Alam, 2nd year Aviation Technology with Pilot Studies student, and Captain of the Men’s Badminton 2nd team.

Can you tell us a little bit about your sport?

Badminton is the fastest racket sport in the world requiring fast racket skills and good footwork around the court.

Why is badminto the sport for you, and how did you get into it?

I started playing with my dad around when I was 11. Since then I started training at my local club and playing tournaments as I grew up.

What does Varsity mean to you?

It is our final game of the year so it is important that we end on a high. We want to enjoy it as well as win and support our fellow Gryphons.

How are you and the team feeling about the game?

Confident about winning . Excited to play our final game.

Who’s the one to watch on your team?

Jonathan Wong is our star singles winning almost all his games this season.

And how will you be preparing for the game?

We will have a few training sessions before to sharpen our skills and tactics. We have already selected teams, and partnerships have stayed the same throughout the season to ensure the strongest partnerships.
