Why did you want to join the A Cappella committee?
I think it allows you to fully throw yourself into something new, as you get to be a part of the running of the society and help make changes you think will really help the group! I wanted to join because I wanted to be even more involved in a thing I loved so much, and had some good ideas for the way things would work.
What’s been the best thing about your time as a committee member?
Getting to know and working with a really talented bunch of people. It gives you that extra depth to the group and it’s really fun making decisions to help the group.
What’s been the biggest challenge, and what did you learn from it?
I think this year, it’s been keeping the group engaged as we’ve been running online. This went to extra lengths when organising a 24-hour stream to raise funds for the society. It took loads of planning with my Treasurer and Fundraiser, El, but I can’t express enough how rewarding it was!
I’ve learnt that anything can be done with a good team and you can be so successful if you put your mind to it. We ended up surpassing our target and we never thought we would do this after one event. It was the best feeling when all our hard work paid off!
How do you think your committee experience will benefit you after graduating?
I think it will not only help me when graduating but in life in general. I think it’s one step up in making big decisions, as you have to make decisions within the best interests of the group. It also teaches you how to act professionally when dealing with situations, as you’re representing the Uni and want to portray your society in the best light! Finally, it builds on your ability to form relationships with people in a bit more of a professional environment, which will always help in future!
Why should students run to join a club or society committee?
It’s a great way to try something new or continue with something you’re really enthusiastic about! Everyone is so friendly and it’s an amazing way to meet like-minded people and create new friendships. It’s also a great distraction when Uni work gets tough and allows time away from your laptop. I’d say it’s great in every way!
Any advice for students thinking about joining or leading a club or society?
I’d advise anyone to go for societies and try something new. It’s always ok if you realise it’s not for you but you’ll never know otherwise! In a committee sense it’s made my time at Uni so exciting, and I couldn’t imagine going back and not doing it. I’d say just be yourself, throw yourself into it and make the most of your time on committee!
