LUCY: So what exactly is Leeds Finsights?
LYDIA: Leeds Finsights is a new student-run financial newsletter based at the University of Leeds. It publishes bi-weekly, and offers careers tips, financial news, equity analysis, opinion blogs, industry insight interviews and much more! The articles are all written by 24 Financial Analysts that were recruited from various years and disciplines across the University. It’s very much a ‘for students, by students’ venture!
LUCY: Can you tell me more about how LUBS came to join forces with the other societies to set up the publication?
LYDIA: Leeds Finsights is currently in partnership with 5 Business School societies, LUBS Society being one of them. The other 4 involved are LUU Trading and Investment Society, LUU Women in Leadership Society, LUU Consulting Society and LUU Cryptocurrency and Blockchain Society. We joined forces in the hope of reaching as wide a student audience across campus as possible.
Our goals as a newsletter greatly align with those of the societies we’ve partnered with, so it was a natural and mutually beneficial fit. For example, I know LUBS Society members may find Leeds Finsights helpful in their company and market research, before attending networking events and employer interviews. We also plan to run collaborative events in the future (hopefully one very soon!).
LUCY: Why do you believe a resource like this is so important for your target audience – what are the benefits?
LYDIA: The University of Leeds is one of the most employable universities, however, we felt as though it was lacking opportunity for students to become financial editors/analysts or receive such accessible briefings as a subscriber. Our aim is to equip the highly motivated students of Leeds, both our Financial Analysts and our subscribers, with the commercial awareness, careers tips and company insights needed to ensure they are the most desirable graduates in the eyes of employers.
LUCY: What can Leeds students expect from Leeds Finsights and the new newsletter?
LYDIA: The newsletter covers 8 core categories: technology, media and telecommunications; guest, interview and industry insight; equities, currencies and foreign exchange; market roundups; positive news; deals and business case studies; politics and policy; and developing, emerging and developed country analysis – but we’re not limited to these areas.
Some of our recent stories have covered Tesla, the Russian rouble and even Ocado, demonstrating just how wide-ranging our coverage is.
It sounds like a lot, but the articles are all written in an accessible and understandable format by our talented student Financial Analysts. So, don’t worry, where financial news can often seem overwhelming, we aim instead to simply educate and enhance students’ understanding!
LUCY: Lastly, how can students access your content and get involved?
LYDIA: Make sure to visit our website – here you can not only subscribe to the newsletter for bi-weekly financial, business and economic briefings, but also read exclusive articles published only to the website!
On our Instagram page, we also post our top daily news picks, and graphics debunking financial jargon, so students can easily access all the finance and business updates they need, straight to their social media feeds. However, Leeds Finsights is also active on Facebook and LinkedIn.
Although our initial recruitment phase has ended, we may be looking for new management board members, editors, as well as more analysts in the future, so keep an eye out, as there’s exciting things ahead!
