What we’re all about

Nightline is a confidential and anonymous listening and information service ran by students, for students. We've been supporting students for 40 years and continue to man the lines every night of term from 8pm until 8am. All volunteers receive full training so that you are fully equipped to support callers with all of their requirements. We also offer e-listening online with instant messaging, from 8pm until 8am, as of the 29th of April 2019.

Want to get involved?

Volunteering for Leeds Nightline is one of the most rewarding experiences and we're always looking for enthusiastic students to join us. You can apply to become a volunteer at any time! Want to know what volunteering with Leeds Nightline is really like?  Feel free to check out '10 Myths about Leeds Nightline' below, which was produced in February 2018.

Volunteer Testament

“Last night was the last shift of the year and also my last shift with Leeds Nightline. I've met some of the most amazing and inspiring people of my life while being a part of this society and I think it's probably the best thing I've done while being at uni.”

"If I had to choose the most important thing I've learnt as a Nightliner, it would be that you never know how someone else is feeling- you will never understand everything about their situation, or what's going on their mind, however similar the situation may seem. Just listen, empathise and then listen some more- people don't always want advice or solutions, they just want to be heard."

Our volunteers are selected through our recruitment process, meaning that everybody's in the same boat, and you don't have to fear that others have joined the society in existing friendship groups."

“There really aren't enough 'active listeners' in the world, but going through such a comprehensive training programme over the course of three or four days really does prepare you not only for shifts, but for your life beyond that. My confidence has also grown massively. Volunteering has also seriously made me reconsider my future career plans, as I know it has also for several other volunteers."

“A lot of societies I feel like you have to be quite confident or a big character to really get involved and feel like you make a difference. With Nightline, not only did I get to contribute to a great cause, but I could do it without any attention and quietly do my bit.

Nightline Volunteer, 2019

“Volunteering is a great way to get out of your own bubble of life - you can forget about your life and issues for a little while - and help others reflect on their own as well as get some perspective on yours."

Nightline Volunteer, 2019

“That secret pride you have when you leave a shift and no one knows that you’ve just spent the night doing the nicest and most wholesome and helpful thing."

"Who knew there was so much skill involved in listening?! I have learnt to be a truly active listener and how to be someone people want to talk to. I've learnt to empathise with people whose views i disagree with and amazingly I've learnt the skill of public speaking - i never thought I'd overcome my fear of that!”

Nightline Volunteer, 2019

It's been far better than I expected! I seriously underestimated the amount of amazing people I'd meet, and the amazing range of socials the (secret) society has on offer!”
