What we’re all about

Ballet is the basis of all dances today and we have a class and level of difficulty to suit all abilities, so if you are keen and interested then you will love our society. Ballet is one of the most beautiful and elegant forms of dance, and is renowned for its ability to improve strength, fitness, flexibility, posture and tone. For men, strength and power are pushed even further through lifts and jumps in class.

Membership fees and all of our classes will be available to buy from late September onwards by clicking on either the 'buy membership' or 'visit our shop' tabs on the top/right of this page. You will need to buy membership before you can attend our classes and socials.

Membership for the Ballet Society 2018/19 will cost £10, which includes a discount card for Revolution. There is also the option to purchase membership plus a t-shirt, which includes a ballet society t-shirt with our logo and the Leeds University crest on it.

Class prices vary depending on the length of the class, and a full list of prices can be found on our shop tab. A class fee covers one entire semester, with the exception of ballet fit which can be bought as one-off classes. Please note that you do NOT need to purchase the class fee for either of the competition classes, this will be processed later in the year.

Classes start 1st October (with the exception of the Intermediate Competition class which starts Thursday 18th October).

Unfortunately you will need to purchase the full term's class to reserve a space, however all students are entitled to a FULL REFUND within the first 2 weeks of Semester 1 if you decide to leave the class. We are unable to process refunds for memberships.

Our classes are very popular, so in the event of them being full you can join the waiting list by emailing us at

The Leeds University Union Ballet Society has been established for over forty years. We have around 220 students who attend classes to keep fit, improve their technique, perform, and make new friends. We are open to anyone with a keen interest in ballet, and we cater for all levels of experience; from complete beginners to advanced dancers. All classes are held on campus within purpose-built studios with sprung floors, mirrors and barres in either the stage@leeds or the union dance studios (please check the timetable to confirm where each class is located). All of our classes are taught by professional teachers who provide support, coaching and advice as well as challenging yet fun material.

Performances and Competitions

Our award winning advanced competition team was formed two years ago. Last year the team won three awards: 2nd place at Newcastle University Dance Competition, Best Choreography at Leeds University Intercomp, and 3rd Place at Sheffield University Dance Competition. This team really is the biggest asset the society has, giving students the opportunity to travel to different cities across the north of England to perform award winning choreography and make lifelong friendships in a welcoming environment. Each year a new team is formed and auditions will be held in the first few weeks of term.

This year (2018/19) we have also introduced a brand new INTERMEDIATE COMPETITION TEAM! This team is for those wishing to compete at a less technically intense level with NO AUDITIONS.

Every year ballet enters in the successful annual dance show held at the university in March, this year we are looking to build upon this success and show everybody the talent within the LUU Ballet Society. For 2018/19 there will be a show class who will learn an exciting new routine and perform this in the LUU dance show. The intermediate pointe class will also turn into a show class in Semester 2, enabling our dancers to show off their pointe skills on stage in the show.

In semester 1 we had lots of successful socials. These include trips to Northern Ballet to watch The Nutcracker and an exclusive company class, Revs socials, a Christmas Meal, and a pub quiz, to name a few. We have many more exciting socials planned for Semester 2, including:

Wednesday 30th January: Welcome Back Drinks!!!  (location and time TBC)
THEME: Toy Story (freshers: aliens - you don't have to be a first year to be a fresher it's anyone who is NEW to ballet this year; returners: soldiers (anyone you has been part of the ballet soc before; committee: characters from the movie)
- Friday 15th February: Otley Run (starts at Woodies, time TBC)
- Wednesday 27th February: Pub Quiz (Royal Park Pub, time TBC)
Sunday 10th March: Royal Ballet's Sleeping Beauty  (Vue Cinema @ 3pm)
Wednesday 13th March: Nothern Ballet Victoria (Leeds Grand Theatre @ 7.30pm)

Times, locations and other details will be posted on the 'Leeds Ballet Society Members 2018-19' facebook group closer to the dates and are subject to change, so please join the group for more details:
