What we’re all about
Founded many years ago, the Leeds University Union Wine Society has passed through numerous hands, but we have always been united on the same basic principle: Introducing people to wine without any of the associated pretence. Our main objective is to provide a relaxed environment in which people can learn more about wine and what makes it so amazing and complex. We often invite guest speakers such as local merchants, producers or trade experts to share their knowledge and products with us. As an extremely social group we meet regularly for our usual tastings, but go out into the city or host special collaborative events several times a year as well.
We strive to be a sustainable society both economically and environmentally. Under the umbrella of the Leeds University Union, we work as a non-profit organisation by investing any profit we make right back into the society and its members. We also pride ourselves on supporting local independent retailers by buying the majority of our wine from them when possible and promoting their businesses and events to our members, showcasing what Yorkshire wine merchants and smaller producers have to offer. As a responsible and green society, we also ensure all paper, cardboard and glass bottles are recycled at the end of any event.
In early 2017 we won a Fundraising Award for hitting our grant targets which we used to benefit the society in various ways and were nominated for a Riley Award for Best General Interest Society. Let's continue to make 2019-2020 an amazing year together! Whether you’re a complete novice or a connoisseur to the wonderful world of wine, we’d love you to join us for some fantastic tipples at a variety of different events. There's no snobbery, waistcoats or bow ties required. We only want you to have fun learning, tasting and making new friends.
We run regular wine tastings at the union to explore and understand more about this wonderful drink, these are exclusive to our members or pass holders. However, we do hold a session every month open to the public as well as our GIAG events. Semester 1 is centred on the world of wine. You’ll taste wines from the Old World and New World, covering the classics and even some wines that you probably never knew existed. Our
Give It A Go (GIAG) sessions are always a great way to see what we’re about and meet everyone. If you are not a student at the University of Leeds or haven't registered yet, you can still join us by simply logging in as a guest.
Semester 1 Schedule:
Events marked by an "M" are for members or pass holders only. We will not be selling individual tickets for them.
Wine Soc Pass Semester 1 - £40
This package saves you a lot of money and includes the cost of all of our members only events as well as discounts on our public events (including GIAGs) and a discount card for our affiliates. That’s at least 65 different wines for less than £1 each! Great for those worried about money by the end of the semester but still want an active social life.
(Please note that membership is non-refundable due to the cost of products bought based on predicted numbers per event.)
3 events pass Semester 1 - £25
This gives you access to 3 events of your choice. This is a good option to gain access to our members only events without having to commit to the full membership. This pass can also be used on our public events.
Available to all members: 1) Attend any five tastings in Semester 1 and Christmas dinner pre-drinks are on us.
Plus, if you buy a wine soc Pass before the first tasting on the 21st of October we'll welcome you to Introduction to Wine with a complimentary glass of Prosecco. Cheers grape friends!
