The Picture House presents Shiva Baby
This New-York, Jewish comedy of manners has a premise worthy of a horror movie. What if your carefully curated secret life as a sex-worker came crashing into your wealthy and respectable family-life while you are in line for the buffet at a stranger’s funeral?
Director Emma Seligman manages to keep tensions high and the dark laughs coming as the story unravels at a relentless pace. The main character, Danielle (Rachel Sennott), doesn’t get a moments’ rest as she is thrust along in a constantly escalating social nightmare, with her sugar-daddy’s child, carried by his beautiful wife, seeming to scream and wail at Danielle’s every misfortune. The baby-scream chorus seems to beg the question, are there any adults really here?
