The Picture House presents Ahead of the Curve
In 1990 Franco Stevens maxed out a stack of new credit cards and bet it all on a horse race. And she won. Big. In a queer, roller-coaster twist on the American dream, Franco used the winnings to found Curve (originally called Deneuve), an unapologetically loud and proud magazine for and about lesbians.
This documentary is co-directed by Franco’s wife Jen Rainin and in it she explores lesbian visibility through the 90’s and into the 21st century. The story of Franco’s iconic magazine, and indeed her own personal life, is a wild ride, a real stranger-than-fiction tale, but Ahead of the Curve proves to be as inspiring and informative as it is entertaining.
A definite must-see for fans of the magazine, but also for anyone interested in lesbian and queer culture, its history, and indeed, its future.
