The University of Leeds community relies heavily on flying in order to operate successfully as a ‘global’ university. Students fly from around the world to study at Leeds, and staff travel to international conferences every year.
But the climate emergency, the University’s 2030 net-zero commitment, and now the pandemic, show that things can and must be done differently.
This event, hosted by the University’s Student-Staff Climate Coalition, provides space for an open and honest discussion about how we use air travel going forwards. This discussion is especially important given the recent controversial decision by Leeds City Council to conditionally approve the expansion of Leeds Bradford Airport.
Speakers:
· Dr Victoria Smith, Committee member for GALBA (Group for Action on Leeds Bradford Airport)
· James Dixon-Gough, Sustainability Manager for the Sustainability Service at the University of Leeds
· Franks Feng, International Officer for Leeds University Union
· Dr Gabriella Alberti, Associate Professor in the Leeds University Business School and member of the Student-Staff Climate Coalition
Hannah Crowther, a second year student in BSc Sustainability and Environmental Management and member of the Student-Staff Climate Coalition, will be chairing the event.
This event is part of Leeds University Union’s Climate Week and is open to everyone.
