What we’re all about
Founded in 1897, The Gryphon is Leeds University’s official student newspaper and is regarded as one of the most successful and prestigious student publications in the UK. Our alumni include Paul Dacre, Jay Rayner, Polly Curtis, and Nicholas Witchell, as well as current journalists on the Mirror, the Times, and the Evening Standard. Whether you’re an experienced journalist or just a beginner, we offer training and feedback to help launch your writing career.
Anyone can write for The Gryphon, you don’t need previous writing experience, as we provide training and personalised feedback. Whether you have a passion for fashion journalism, or want to learn how to write a cracking sports report, we have a team of experienced editors to help you improve.
The Gryphon is made up of 13 different sections, ranging from music to arts, science to sport. Each section holds a weekly meeting in The Gryphon office, just upstairs in the union building. For our latest meeting schedule, please head to www.thegryphon.co.uk/joinus/.
We organise a range of social events throughout the year, from pub quizzes and bowling, to cocktail nights and (our favourite) meals at Akmals. We also organise careers events, alumni talks and media conferences to help you meet likeminded journalists and potential employers.
One year membership costs £10, or you can buy a joint Media Membership (which includes membership to LSR and LSTV) for £25.
