Where to live
Leeds is a pretty big place, so we’ve gathered some of the types of accommodation and key student areas for you to take a look at.
Halls of residence
University halls are the popular choice of accommodation amongst many of our students, particularly freshers. There are lots of options available, including single ensuite rooms, sharing facilities and a range of catering choices. Find all the university halls on the University website.
There are also private halls and housing available if any of the University sites don’t appeal to you – Unipol and Unihomes and good places to start your search.
Areas of Leeds
Hyde Park
Well-known for bustling with student life, Hyde Park is a great choice for those looking to house share with their friends, coursemates or even someone new. It’s between a 5-15 minute walk to campus and is very popular with our second, third and fourth year students, along with postgraduate students. It’s also not too far from town, and close to neighbouring Headingley, with great pubs, shops and coffee stops. Close to Hyde Park, Burley is another great option if this is what you’re looking for – but just that little bit quieter.
Woodhouse
Woodhouse is closest to the city and directly opposite campus. It’s a similar atmosphere to Hyde Park, with the bonus of being 5 minutes from campus and the town centre.
Headingley
Headingley is a bit further out from uni and similarly student friendly, with more of a relaxed villagey vibe. It’s home to Headingley Stadium, some great nightlife, pubs, cute coffee spots and depending on where you live, is between a 20-30 minute walk onto campus. That said, most students living in Headingley and neighbouring area Burley tend to opt for public transport to get around.
Meanwood
Meanwood is further from campus and popular with students returning to Leeds for postgraduate studies and young professionals. It’s a more relaxed residential area with some great pubs, supermarkets, and local independent shops and cafes – as well as a pretty park. Similar to Headingley, you’ll need some form of transport to get to campus – cycling or the 51 and 52 bus routes are your best bet.
Transport
Leeds is a well connected city when it comes to transport, with lots of different options to get around. Buses are frequent from most places, and First Bus offer student ticket prices, alongside a student bus pass.
Bus Routes:
Here are the main bus routes running from the student areas, the University and the City Centre, but it’s worth downloading the First Bus app to use their journey planner:
Bus number 28 – Runs from the City Centre to Headingley and beyond. The route stops along the main road connecting the City Centre, University Campus, Hyde Park and Headingley.
Bus number 56 – Runs through Hyde Park and Headingley if you’re looking to travel between the student areas, with stops by the University Campus and in the City Centre – a longer route than 28.
Bus number 19/19A – Runs from Leeds City Centre into Headingley, stopping near Headingley stadium.
Here’s what to look for when heading to the nearest bus stop:

There are a number of train stations connecting the city, at Headingley, Burley Park and the city centre, making it easy for you to see friends, go on a trip or visit home.
Get yourself a 16-25 railcard through Trainline to make those train journeys that little bit cheaper.
Lots of taxi services run in the city too, including Uber and our partner Amber Cars.

Morrisons – Located at the top of town nearer to campus, Morrisons is a great place to go for your big shop.
Tesco – There are lots of Tescos located around campus and in the city centre, perfect if you’ve forgotten a key ingredient or need a lunch break from your studies.
Sainsburys – In the depths of the main student area is Sainsburys, a popular choice for revision snacks or picnic essentials on a sunny afternoon – there are two located in the centre of Hyde Park.
