Student Action for Refugees

What we’re all about

Student Action For Refugee's (STAR) were voted the Overall Society of the Year in the 2016 Riley Awards. STAR run regular conversation classes in Leeds to help local refugees and asylum seekers with language skills and local knowledge. STAR also campaign for equality and improved refugee rights in the UK.

We meet at Parkinson steps on Wednesdays and our conversation class takes place from 1PM-3.30PM. On Saturday, we meet at the Union Foyer 1.30PM-4PM where unlimited tea and biscuits will be supplied. No English teaching skills are required for the conversation classes.

Weekly meetings are held where campaigns and fundraisers are organised. Equal Access is the campaign that Leeds STAR will be focusing on, urging the University to provide scholarships and bursaries to asylum seekers so that they have an opportunity to attend higher education. We also plan on collecting on campus old computers and bikes to refurbish them and donate them.
