Sociology & Social Policy (SocSoc)

What we’re all about

Hello and welcome to SocSoc!

SocSoc is one of Leeds' friendliest, most proactive and diverse societies. Run entirely by University of Leeds students, we are open to anybody studying Sociology, Social Policy or any variation including Social Policy and Crime, Social Policy and Enterprise and much more. However, we are more than welcoming towards anybody who does not study these subjects too.

What we do

SocSoc was created to give our members the best university experience possible. We aim to have activities to suit every single one of our members from traditional undergraduates to mature students to international students and even those who do not study our core subjects but have a deep interest in it.

Here is a quick idea of things you can expect from us throughout the following year:

  • Socials - club nights, pub nights, trips out of Leeds, meals, picnics, a Christmas party and of course, the famous Leeds 'Otley Run'
  • A men's football team
  • A women's netball team
  • Debates
  • Talks from guest speakers and local sociologists
  • Fundraising events
  • Outings

If there is anything else that you would like to do, please get in touch and we will do our best to arrange something for you.

How to join

Either join via this website by signing in with your university login details and clicking 'Join group' or come and visit us at the freshers' fair. You will also see us around during freshers' week.

Any questions, do not hesitate to get in touch.

We can't wait to see you!

President of SocSoc - Harry Buglass

SocSoc is an academic society, with a committee dedicated to providing you with both academic support and social events, to help you meet more people on your course. To achieve this, however, we need your input. We want to hear your fun ideas for social events or even ambitious suggestions for how we can support you academically during your time in Leeds. Anything is possible. I am an ambitious second-year student, who wants to hear your suggestions.

Send me your ideas: ss17hb@leeds.ac.uk

 A word from the Secretary

I hope your first few weeks of University have been amazing and i hope you are all getting stuck into university life. I just wanted to wish all of you all the best during your time at University of Leeds whether you are a fresher or a final year student. If anyone has any questions regarding the society or just university in general then do not hesitate to contact me, my email is below and under the committee tab. I look forward to meeting all of you at the various events that will be done throughout the year.

A word from the Social Sec

We've planned a very exciting year ahead for you all! We want to make SocSoc as inclusive for everyone as possible and host a range of activities and socials throughout the year that can cater to everyone in the society.

Everyone is welcome at the socials we host and they are a great way to get involved, have fun and meet other like-minded people! We plan to host a range of events at some of the most popular venues in Leeds and try to always make sure SocSoc members get good deals and discounts. We will also be hosting a Christmas party for the society and hopefully a weekend trip out of Leeds, so make sure to follow our Facebook page to keep updated on when our socials will be happening!

A word from the fundraising secs

Throughout the year, we are going to be doing fundraising activities for our chosen charity - if anyone has any ideas of which charity to support, feel free to contact one of the SocSoc team! Also if anyone wants to get involved with fundraising, contact one of us and we would love to work with you!

We will be running events such as quiz nights and bake sales to help a good cause and meet likeminded people! We look forward to working with you!

A word from the netball captain

SocSoc netball is for anyone who's ever played netball or anyone who wants to start! It involves weekly casually competitive matches against other societies. There's nothing majorly serious about it and it's a great opportunity to socialise and participate in an alternative form of exercise. I've been in the SocSoc netball team since first year and find it so fun and definitely made some great mates through it. I'm sure you've all played netball at some point in your school careers, even if just at secondary. Bring some mates and come see what it's like, there are no trials or anything it's just a great opportunity for some team fun and post-match pints.

Ruth

A word from the football captain

The football social team is for anyone with any experience that wants to get involved in weekly games vs other societies. There will be nights out and drinks after games on a sunday to look forward to and the team is a great way to enjoy uni with your mates and other members of your course. Anyone from any course and year can participate! Any questions feel free to pop me a message on Facebook or email me at cl16ok@leeds.ac.uk
