We recognise that Headingley is a well-loved area where many of our students live and that the Otley Run is an important aspect of student life. We want to reassure you that LUU is working in partnership with The University, and other key partners in the city, to continue to prioritise the safety, security, and wellbeing of our entire community.
The University is liaising closely with the police who have confirmed that the incident was isolated and involved one individual who was detained shortly after police were called. If anyone has any information which could assist the investigation, they should call 101 quoting log number 925 of 26 April.
Over the coming days, uniformed police officers will be visible to reassure anyone in the affected area. This is especially important as Varsity will be a big part of this week, so expect to see an increased presence of security around Headingley and inside Headingley Stadium, in addition to the comprehensive measures they already have in place to keep everyone safe.
We understand that incidents like this can be alarming and cause anxiety. We want to reassure you that support services are available to any member of our community who has been affected.
Support for Students
We at Leeds University Union along with The University’s counselling and wellbeing services offer students help, advice, and a safe space to talk about any concerns and issues.
The SafeZone app can also be used to ask for help – this is linked directly to the University’s Security team who are on call to help you 24/7 – or contact 0113 343 5494.
There is more information on student safety available on the University’s For Students website.
