Tell us a little bit about yourself!
Hi! I’m Bethan, the new Education officer here at LUU. I have just finished my undergraduate degree in Theatre and Performance with Enterprise, and I’ve loved it. I’ve been heavily involved in (shockingly) theatre societies during my time at uni, and being president of the Open Theatre society has been such an amazing experience. I’ve loved getting to meet lots of new people and return to the stage after a long long break.
Why did you want to join the Exec?
I wanted to join the Exec because I have seen the change they have been able to achieve in the past few years, and I wanted to have a go at driving that change! I’ve been at the Uni before (briefly), during, and now hopefully post-covid, and after so much adaptation forced on student members, I really wanted to keep this momentum going and start making changes with an individual student focus.
What are your priorities for the year ahead?
Communication! There are so many resources, tools and equipment that the University and Union can provide to its students that just haven’t been communicated for a while. A reminder of everything that students can access is a small change but one that will make a massive impact.
Trust is another big priority for me. The trust between students and the university has been broken as a result of reasons beyond either party’s control. I think it’s hugely important to start the long process of building back this trust by communicating the impact that individuals can have on the university experience.
What are you most looking forward to in your role?
I’m looking forward to meeting so many amazing people doing so many amazing things. The amount of work that I’ve already seen going on behind the scenes to ensure that students have the best experience possible has been inspiring. The other five Exec members are some of the most driven people I’ve ever met, and I can’t wait to see what we all accomplish this year. I’ve got to say I’m also very excited for the Riley awards – it’s one of the best nights for societies to get together and celebrate, and this year it was one of my favourite nights!
Is there a message you’d like to send to our students?
Get involved in everything you possibly can! Whether it’s becoming a school rep or coming to see us in the Exec office and asking a question, you’ll be surprised just how open the University is to change, so don’t be afraid to bring your ideas to the table.
