The story behind the design
“The biggest highlight of my time at Uni so far has definitely been the friends I have made – every figure depicted is based off someone who has made my time at Leeds more memorable and enjoyable. The picture is split in thirds and shows a typical day in a student’s life at Leeds. It starts in the library, then a catch up in Hyde Park with your friends, and ends on a night out! The style that was chosen is reminiscent of an old Indian folk art style called Kalamkari – which originates from the part of India I am from. Since coming to Uni, I have learnt to really appreciate and be proud of my culture and heritage so I wanted the design to reflect that too.”
Comments from James, Chilly’s founder
“I have always loved designs that you continue to find little details every time you look! This design has so much of this whilst still celebrating key aspects of Leeds. I love the overall energy and think the quality of the illustration is incredible!”

Second place: María José Morán
The story behind the design
“Little did I know when I first came to Leeds that this city would grant me several opportunities that would help me grow both as a student and as a person. The one that I value the most? Being given the possibility to be the truest version of myself. As spring started to blossom, daffodils appeared and covered Leeds in yellow. It was precisely while looking at those gorgeous flowers that I realised the following: being in Leeds I am the happiest I have ever been. And from that very moment, daffodils won a special place in my heart as they will always remind me of how much I love my time at Leeds.”
Comments from James, Chilly’s founder
“One of our matras at Chilly’s is “less but better”. This design really does this well! I love the simplicity and the typography in the illustration. I really enjoyed reading María’s reasoning for choosing daffodils. It felt really personal and that is what design should be all about!”
Third place: Jianan Hu
The story behind the design
“The architecture, trees and lively people in Leeds are very impressive to me. I hope to use free lines and colours to express my impression of Leeds.”
Comments from James, Chilly’s founder
“Really loved this distinctive style. It is not easy to not make landmarks feel “touristy” but this style, and use of colour, makes for a really artistic design.”

Notable mention: Isabelle Stansbury
While it didn’t quite make the top three, this design really captured the attention of the judges, so we wanted to give it a special mention alongside our winners.
The story behind the design
“When thinking about Leeds, the first thing I think of are the people I have memories with there. After that, it’s the places these memories are made. There are so many places that are special to Leeds, like Woodhouse Moor, where students will sit in summer, or the “Wavy Bacon” statue that students walk past every day on campus. There’s also places like the 24hr Sainsbury’s in Hyde Park, that make no sense to anyone else, but is a shared landmark for all students in that area. I wanted to illustrate all these places, that are iconic to Leeds and are shared between students, and place them together on the bottle. I’ve loved my time at Leeds so far, and these places will always have many memories attached to them.”
Comments from James, Chilly’s founder
“So many landmarks that I instantly recognised! A beautiful design that thoroughly deserves a special mention.”
