Liberate LUU’s Guide to Accessing Support
Here at LUU and beyond, there are lots of resources to support you with your mental health, many of which are specifically tailored to different liberation groups.
Below, our team of Liberation Coordinators have brought together many of the groups and and societies available to help students find the right support for them, whatever their background or circumstances.

Support Groups & Welfare Societies for Liberation Groups
Joining a support group or welfare society is a great way to meet other people with similar life experiences and needs. Having a shared space which offers a place of community can be incredible for both emotional and mental health. Find a some of the support you can access here in Leeds below:
LGBTQ+ Support
Galop is an LGBTQ+ Anti-abuse charity, offering a range of support services.
Chrysalis runs a support group for those questioning their gender identity.
Leeds Touchstone offers a range of support groups for different identities and situations.
LUU’s LGBTQ+ Society aims to create safe and accessible spaces for LGBT+ people by LGBT+ people, so on our committee there is a welfare officer for the following groups – POC, women, men, disability, asexuality, and bi+ people.
BME Support Groups
Young Black Minds, a subgroup within Leeds Mind, gives peer support to Black men struggling with their mental health. LUU is hosting a Creative Wellbeing event with them on the 12th February, check it out here.
African Rainbow Family support LGBTIQ people of African heritage and the wider Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic groups.
Live Well Leeds offer a BME women’s group, a BME Men’s group, a South Asian Women’s group and a Visually impaired support group, as well as a variety of others.
Women’s Support
Leeds Women’s Aid supports those suffering from Domestic abuse.
Dosti is a support group for Asian women to make friends.
Leeds Mind is developing their peer support model to enable women from South Asian communities to access peer-led group work within their local community. Find out more here.
Disability Group Support
LUU’s Disabled Student Network is a space for people to connect with others who understand the difficulties faced by living life as a student with a disability or long-term/chronic mental or physical health condition, with scope for organising disability rights activism.
LUU’S Neurodivergent Society is the place for neurodiverse people (diagnosed or not) to come to for support and general hanging out! Neurodiversity covers a wide range of conditions including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, Tourette’s, dyscalculia, and more.
General Support
Leeds – Yorkshire MESMAC have a wide range of support groups, including Angels of Freedom, the Bayard Project, Gendered Intelligence, Leeds Bi Group, Leeds Gay Men, Leeds LGBTQ+ Group for people with a learning disability/Autism, Lesbian Socials Leeds, Proud ‘n’ Diverse, Nonbinary Leeds, TransLeeds, Transtastic and more!

Counsellors & Therapy groups for Liberation Groups
Finding a Counsellor or Therapist that understands what it’s like to come from a liberation group can be intimidating. To help with this we’ve highlighted some inclusive therapy services that you can have a look at:
The Psychology Today website can be used to help you find a therapist, with filters enabling you to filter by race & sexuality.
Gendered Intelligence provides a Therapists and Counsellors Directory for Trans-inclusive therapists.
Pink Therapy also has an Online Directory of Therapists for LGBTQ+ people.
The Black, African & Asian Therapy Network offer free / subsidised Services.
You can access the free Psychotherapy Network for affordable private therapy options.
The Black LGBTQIA+ Therapy Fund also lists inclusive therapists.
Spectra focusses on Trans Counselling.
Maximillian Mustafa-Holzapfel works with all Liberation groups in a non-judgemental setting.
You also can use the NHS right to choose if going through NHS mental health services to make sure you’re getting the right care.
LUU Help & Support is also available to help with any issue, including mental health & access.
