What we’re all about
We are a mixed gender club who welcome all abilities and experiences, catering to students and staff members at any Leeds based academic institution, from Leeds Beckett, Leeds College of Art and more. Training is held at Bradford Ice Arena on Wednesday and Saturday nights, these training sessions are free for all members. We also host a variety of socials when not on the ice ranging from nights out to meals and of course watching Ice Hockey. Described as one of the friendliest sports societies around, coupled with the fastest team sport in the world, excitement is guaranteed!
Despite our youth - having formed in 2015 - Leeds Gryphons Ice Hockey Club have won 2 Divisional titles and 3 Conference titles while playing in Division 4 all the way up to Division 1 of the BUIHA (the highest level of British University ice hockey)! The club gained Gryphons status in 2016 joining the other sport societies in representing the university in top-tier sport and access to exceptional facilities.
Free weekly training sessions take place at Bradford Ice Arena:
Mixed on Wednesdays, 12:00AM-1:30AM
Mixed on Saturdays, 10.30PM-12AM
Informal skating lessons on Wednesday afternoons, 11AM-3.30PM (entry to the rink required)
Weekly skills, fitness and conditioning sessions will be run throughout the year, offering an opportunity to hone your stickhandling, explosive power and agility. Utilising the EDGE sports halls and the great outdoors to boost your on-ice ability.
Players who would like to experience Ice Hockey but are still getting their ice legs are more than welcome to join the off-ice sessions and advance onto the ice at their own pace.
Through the year we run regular socials ranging from club nights out, meals, film nights and even going to watch Ice Hockey matches at the Sheffield Arena.
In April we will attend the BUIHA Nationals, a weekend packed with tournament Ice Hockey and socialising with other teams in Sheffield. Not to be missed!
At the beginning of the summer term, we host our annual Award Ceremony and AGM, where we present trophies and awards for a range of accomplishments: the very best performers; the most enthusiastic; and those who have improved the most; among others. A very friendly round off to the year and introduction of the new year’s committee.
For those who play in one of the teams, league games are played between November and March against teams from other Universities from around the north of England, and upon winning the Northern Division, against the winning team from the south. Each team is played twice, once at home and once away, giving plenty of opportunity for a challenge and respite from uni work.
Players in the A team will face formidable, full contact competition from Newcastle, Sheffield, Northumbria and Nottingham; while the B team will face off in non-checking Ice Hockey against Northumbria, Nottingham, Sheffield and Manchester.
Towards both ends of the league season we will play a range of friendly challenge matches, for both new and experienced players. And for the 2018-19 year, we hope to take part in the second annual War of the Roses Varsity Match against the Manchester Metros which was attended by over a thousand spectators last year!
