What is Taekwondo?

Taekwondo (‘the art of hand and foot’) is a traditional Korean martial art which focuses on kicking, striking, and blocking techniques.

We practice ITF-style taekwondo and we train in traditional techniques, sparring (semi-contact), patterns (set routines), self-defence, and board breaking. With a varied curriculum and expert teaching tailored to the individual students’ pace and needs, there’s something for everybody.

LUUTKD is an incredibly vibrant and supportive club. We welcome members of all abilities and grades, so you’ll fit right in whether you’re an experienced taekwondo practitioner or completely new to martial arts.

Taekwondo will help improve your overall fitness and strength, as well as increasing your agility and flexibility. It doesn’t matter if you can’t do a press-up or touch your toes right now; we all start somewhere and you’ll be doing spinning kicks before you know it!

As well as developing physical skills, practicing TKD will also help develop your confidence, coordination, and mental discipline.

Socials:

We’re also a very friendly and social group, so you’ll definitely make lots of awesome friends on your journey to black belt. Outside of training we have a really varied and inclusive social calendar, from our legendary Otley Runs to weekends away in the Dales, activity trips, and our weekly post-training get-together for a relaxed dinner and a drink.

What about competing and grading?

We attend competitions during the year, giving you the opportunity to strut your stuff at all ability levels. Competing is, of course, optional, but it’s lots of fun and is one of the best ways to improve your sparring and confidence!

We hold gradings twice per year, roughly at the end of each semester. Grading is also optional – each student progresses at their own pace.

Wednesdays 18:30 – 20:30, The Edge Sports Hall 2

Fridays 17:30 – 19:30, The Edge Sports Hall 2

Saturdays 10:30 – 12:30, Cromer Terrace 

GIAG: 5 October 2016 18:30 - 20:30 The Edge Sports Hall 2

Cost:

Sessions are £2.50 and are paid for via purchase of a session card. These come in blocks of 4, 10, or 22. You can also pay ‘on the door’ for a single session, at a cost of £3.

Membership is £15 and includes your insurance and license booklet.

Great, how do I get involved?

Just come along to one of our classes! Beginners are always welcome at any time of the year. You’ll need to wear loose-fitting clothing and remove any jewellery. Grab a committee member or instructor when you arrive and we'll get you settled in.
