About us:

As part of the Leeds Gryphons programme, Leeds University Swimming and Water polo (LUUSWP) is one of the largest clubs at the University with around 200 members, and a friendly yet competitive atmosphere. Both sports compete in the national BUCS leagues which contain teams from Stirling down to Plymouth.

Swimming-

The swimmers reached National finals in 2015/16 at the BUCS long course placing sixth a great achievement, which contributed to them achieving the prestigious “The Mike Brook Most Improved Team of the Year”.  The team also finished 9th in the short course championships, 1st in Christie Cup and varsity. In recent years, our swimming squad has won the annual varsity event against Leeds Beckett for the last 8 years. They have also placed 14th nationally at the national BUCS championships in 2013/14 and 13th in 2014/15. Last year, we also saw a total of 13 swimmers reaching the national BUCS final for their respective events.

Water Polo-

Polo also had a successful 2015/16 with the girls coming first in their league, Northern 1a, they narrowly missed the finals of Upolo with a close loss in their final qualifying game.  We also compete in the numerous inter-university competitions including Varsity and the Christie Cup. Both of our teams won Varsity convincingly.  In recent years, our women's water polo team were the 2011/12 BUCS national champions! The 12/13 season saw the girls continue their success winning the Leeds Varsity, claiming sliver in the Upolo championships and Christie Cup and making the semi-finals of the national BUCS league. In the 2013/14 season, the women also impressively reached the Upolo finals. The men's team have had great success over the last couple of years, finishing 4th at the 2013/14 BUCS national championships, and finishing in the top 6 during the 2014/15 BUCS championships.

Facilities/Training-

We train at the EDGE leisure centre on the University campus; a brand-new 25m pool and gym which opened in 2010. Please see their website for information about their facilities:  http://sport.leeds.ac.uk/default.asp?section=2&sectionTitle=Home

There are 9 swimming training sessions, 4 water polo sessions and 2 strength and conditioning gym sessions available per week, all of which take place at the EDGE.

The club is one of the largest at Leeds university with over 200 members, and it has a friendly yet competitive atmosphere. The very active social scene within in the club includes weekly socials after Wednesday matches, a black tie Christmas meal and a sports tour to Croatia in the Easter holidays. We offer memberships for swimmers and water polo players aiming to participate in 2/3 sessions a week to keep fit and compete, to memberships aimed at athletes willing to take part in the highly competitive Swimming  and Water Polo National BUCS competitions. The swimming squad has also entered into a new partnership with City of Leeds Swimming Club offering access to 50m training facilities, elite coaches and additional competitions. The Club is always delighted to welcome new members and is dedicated to providing a friendly and social atmosphere within and amongst both the swimming and water polo sides of the club. A great way to compete, a chance at BUCS success and a fantastic way to meet new friends - for life!

We run an informal trials session for swimming to filter people into squads: Development A, Development B and Performance. The basic level we expect of the swimmers is to be able to cope with 50m sprints. Trials for swimmers wanting to be in the performance squad will take place on Wednesday 21st September at the Edge (Go to fresher's fair for more details and time of the trails!), this will be in a training session format. Trials for the water polo squads will take place on Sunday 25th September at 15:30, at the Edge.  A trial only costs £3 with a large squad selected based on times. If you are unsure which trial to attend come & speak to us at the fresher's fair on the 20th & 21st of September down at The Edge Sports Hall. If you wish to join the swimming squad, you can only purchase a membership after being invited to join the club following trials.
