We are the Leeds University Union Horse Riding Club, offering weekly lessons for all levels from complete beginner to advanced, fantastic socials and the chance to compete for the University in one of our three BUCS league teams. Like us on facebook, https://www.facebook.com/pages/Leeds-University-Union-Horse-Riding-Club/518028911569263, follow us on twitter @luuhrc1 or come to Old Bar on the first and third Tuesday of the month from 6pm til 7pm to meet the rabble.
Join up in Freshers Week for only £25! Usually membership for the year is £30, or £20 if you join for just one semester. This price covers free boot and hat hire, subsidised lessons and access to our incredible socials. Our lessons are competitively priced from £14 - £19 for a group lesson (up to 5 people) for up to an hour. Club competitions such as gymkhanas, dressage and showjumping are organised throughout the year, and for all of these we use the riding school’s horses, a perfect opportunity for those who have always wanted to compete but never had their own horse.
Sign up here by clicking “join this group” at the top of this page. If you are having any problems with this email us (firstname.lastname@example.org) or come and talk to us at Old Bar.
All lessons and training are held at Acrecliffe Equestrian Centre (http://www.acrecliffe.co.uk) - approx 30mins drive from Leeds city centre and easily accessible by train or bus. Riders are grouped according to ability and when possible we try to include a driver in this group to aid transport. Where a car is not available, public transport instructions are provided in your lesson confirmation.
Once you have joined, you will be added to our fabulous Lesson Organiser's mailing list. Two weeks in advance of every lesson she will send out a sign up email detailing days and times available every week. If you want a lesson, simply reply to this email stating your name, ability, whether or not you drive and what day/time you prefer to be allocated a lesson space, and she will do the rest! Once you receive a confirmation email then you can pay for your lesson by going online to the Leeds University Union website, find our page, click 'shop' and then select either select 'Beginners Lesson' or 'All other Levels lesson'. Please note, lesson times are assigned on a first come first served basis so check your email regularly to ensure you get the time you prefer. Any questions? Come see us for a chat at the Old Bar and you can pay for your lesson there as well, or email email@example.com
The levels and times of our lessons are described below:
Beginner: Riders who have never ridden before or have barely ridden.
- Wednesday at 3pm
- Thursday at 1pm
- Friday at 10am
Novice: Riders who can walk and trot by themselves confidently and are starting to canter.
Intermediate: Riders who can walk, trot, canter competently and are learning to jump.
Advanced: Riders who can walk, trot, canter and jump competently.
We have three teams entered into the BUCS League; an advanced (A), an intermediate (B) and a novice (C) team. Each team of four competes in their own league against three other university teams in dressage and showjumping at four competitions throughout term 1 and 2. The overall winner of this league goes on to compete against other teams regionally, then the winner of this goes onto compete nationally. We are proud of our history of team successes; having had at least one team beating all others to secure a place in the national championships every year. In 2013 our A team finished in the top 5, with our B team being placed in the top 3 of the country two years in a row previously. The first round of team trials is taking place on Wednesday 5th October 2016 and we need dedicated members of all riding abilities. Join the club to recieve emails and updates from the talented Team Organisers on when trials how to get involved. We will also be recruiting for our development squad of people who can be trained for next year's teams, and compete in friendly compeitions against other universities this year.
Over the course of the year, we also hold internal club competitions of the same format as above and gymkhanas that are open to all club members of all abilities.
Over the last few years we have had a Volunteer Secretary on the committee which was a resounding success. He organises trips every Sunday to a local yard to help with the Riding for the Disabled Association hold lessons. This is a brilliant day out helping with children and ponies and looks great on the CV! If you are interested in helping out then join this part of the club for free at http://www.leedsuniversityunion.org.uk/groups/horseridingproject/
We meet on the first and third Tuesday of the month at the Old Bar 6pm-7pm so come along for a drink and meet the committee and other club members. We organise a number of socials throughout the year for all club members, from nights out with amazing drinks offers to days out at places like Bramham Horse Trials, and we would love to hear what you want as well. All details of upcoming events are posted on facebook https://www.facebook.com/pages/Leeds-University-Union-Horse-Riding-Club/518028911569263 and twitter @luuhrc1, and on signing up you will be added to the mailing list of our wonderful Social Secretary and Events Secretary.
