**due to issues regarding weight restrictions on the roof garden, no volunteer sessions are running until further notice**

We run volunteer sessions every Monday and Wednesday which are free and you can just turn up - no need to commit or book. Everyone is welcome to join our volunteer sessions and events; students, staff and members of the wider community including children accompanied by an adult.

  • Every Monday 12pm - 2pm, The Roof Garden, Level 2 Leeds University Union, University of Leeds Campus LS2 9JT.
  • Every Wednesday 12pm - 2pm (until 6pm, from April to October) Sustainable Garden (next to Roger Stevens Lecture Theatre), University of Leeds Campus LS2 9JT.
  • Monthly Tuesday sessions at St George’s Field forest garden

You can come along for a short time or the whole session, no experience needed. There’s always some produce to take home and lots of opportunities to ask questions, learn new skills, share ideas and get stuck into growing tasty organic vegetables. It’s a great way to chill out, do something new and meet new friends in a beautiful space; all are welcome. We provide tools, tea and snacks.

There are toilets nearby, and if you aren't sure where we are, drop in to the Level 2 LUU building offices next to the Roof Garden.

If you become a regular volunteer, we are happy to provide references and also share our experience and advice on other gardening volunteering opportunities, or pursuing a career in horticulture. Let us know if you are interested in taking responsibility for a specific area of the garden or would like further training.

We're really keen to support you with your ideas for research projects, work placements or events you’d like to make happen in the gardens.

We also run film nights, courses & workshops throughout the year. Workshops include making kimchi, sauerkraut, growing edible mushrooms, chutney and jam making, herbal medicine, apple juicing, foraging walks, wreath making, sprouting and growing pea shoots. If you would like to suggest a workshop please let us know.

You can also get involved in LUU’s student-run salad enterprise where we grow, pick & pack tasty salad to sell in Essentials, the Refectory, and pop up markets. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn how to run a social enterprise and get lots of transferable skills for your future career.

Roof Garden

LUU's community food growing project Rooted is based here, and our volunteer sessions and events are open to anyone; students, staff and members of the wider community.

Sustainable Garden

This garden is a collaboration between LUU Rooted, University of Leeds Sustainability and University of Leeds Estates, and LUU Rooted designed and planted all the edible areas of the garden. 

The Sustainable Garden is in the middle of campus, next to the Roger Stevens building. View a map.

You are welcome to harvest anytime from the gardens, just follow the signs to know when a crop is ready. We have organic vegetable beds, a herb garden, a forest garden, an edible flower garden and a salad garden.
