Introduction to LUNS
Welcome to one of the oldest running societies at The University of Leeds. Throughout the year we host a wide range of events for our members from Speakers Talks, Socials, Trips, Conferences across the UK and Internationally to of course our MUN sessions. Check out more in depth of what we do here:
MUN Sessions
We hold bi-weekly Model United Nations Sessions throughout the course of the year. We discuss a wide range of topics and try to create world peace. We’re not always successful, but we do have a lot of fun taking on different worldviews and arguing. It’s a chance to learn something new about the world, and see just how good you are at accents and impressions! One week you could represent the USA on climate change, the next you could be Saudi Arabia talking about women’s’ rights. Every session promises a new theme and tons of fun.
Speakers Talk
We try to hold up to two speakers talks every semester. Each time we try to come up with a theme to discuss and invite as many speakers as we can. In the past we have had speakers representing all sorts of organisations from International Charities to Politicians to our very own University of Leeds staff.
Career/Company Talks
Something new this year is that we want to help you to start thinking of your life after University and LUNS. That is why we are inviting one organisation or company per semester to talk to our members to learn about what they do and how our members can be involved.
Training
As you know MUN can be a bit challenging especially if you’re new to it. Thats why we hold training session such as “How to MUN” or “What is the United Nations” regularly across the semester. So don’t worry if your a bit confused because these training sessions will definitely help you out.
Chair Training
One part of MUN that many people love is seeing the sessions from the chairing position. That is why we hold our Chair Training Program (CTP) once a semester to train our very own to becoming UK standard recognised and approved chairs. So they can spread the same influence across our own society and others across the UK.
Socials
Socials has always been a bit part of Leeds United Nations Society. After every session, we would usually have a social directly after. Socials can range from trips such as mini-golfing and go-karting to casual night outs to bars and pubs to relaxing sit-downs at the parks and we even have the occasional BBQs. Also, every semester we hold one-off special socials in order to celebrate the achievements we have made that year. So no matter who you are or what you like, we will always have a social for you!
Partnerships with other Societies
We like to pride ourselves as maintaining good relationships with other societies both within the LUU and across the UK and internationally too. We have teamed up with dozens of societies in the LUU including Save the Children, Wateraid and so much more. As well as that we regularly co-host events with the wider MUN community in the UK and especially our partner universities such as Sheffield, Leicester, Liverpool, York and so much more.
Conferences
Not only do we commit to MUN in Leeds but we regularly send delegations to other MUN conferences across the UK and internationally. In the past we have sent delegates and staff to SheffMUN, Liverpool MUN, LeicMUN, ULMUN, LIMUN and so much more. We always try to explore as many MUN conferences as we can and bring back a few awards with us.
Summary
So no matter who you are, what you do or where you come from, Leeds United Nations Society will be there for you. So join us now and become a member of the big family that we are today!
