Weekly skills, fitness and conditioning sessions will be run throughout the year, offering an opportunity to hone your stickhandling, explosive power and agility. Utilising the EDGE sports halls and the great outdoors to boost your on-ice ability.
Players who would like to experience Ice Hockey but are still getting their ice legs are more than welcome to join the off-ice sessions and advance onto the ice at their own pace.
Socialising
Through the year we run regular socials ranging from club nights out, meals, film nights and even going to watch Ice Hockey matches at the Sheffield Arena.
In April we will attend the BUIHA Nationals, a weekend packed with tournament Ice Hockey and socialising with other teams in Sheffield. Not to be missed!
At the beginning of the summer term, we host our annual Award Ceremony and AGM, where we present trophies and awards for a range of accomplishments: the very best performers; the most enthusiastic; and those who have improved the most; among others. A very friendly round off to the year and introduction of the new year’s committee.
Games
For those who play in one of the teams, league games are played between November and March against teams from other Universities from around the north of England, and upon winning the Northern Division, against the winning team from the south. Each team is played twice, once at our home rink and once away, giving plenty of opportunity for a challenge and respite from uni work.
Players in the A team have been promoted to the highest division of University Ice Hockey in the UK (Division 1 Checking), facing formidable, full contact competition from Sheffield, Edinburgh, St Andrews and Nottingham; while the B team will face off in non-checking Ice Hockey against Northumbria, Nottingham, Sheffield and Manchester (Division 1 Non-Checking).
We will be entering our C team into the University cup competition for the second year in a row. After making the finals at nationals at the end of the 2018-2019 season the Leeds Gryphons C team are a forced to be reckoned with in Div 3 Non-Checking!
Towards both ends of the league season we will play a range of friendly challenge matches, for both new and experienced players. At the end of the 2020-2021 season we will be taking part in our third annual War of the Roses Varsity Match against the Manchester Metros which was attended by over a thousand spectators last year!
