Sunday Hikes
Each Sunday we will be heading into the beautiful countryside of the Yorkshire Dales, Peak District and North York Moors. There’s always a variety of routes from a gentle walk to a day long hike and even the possibility of a scramble!
It’s a chance to leave Leeds, switch off from university life and spend time with a great group of friendly people!
Weekend Trips
Our weekends away are where the real fun starts, with more time available, we really get stuck into the mountains. This semester, we are heading off to the Scottish Highlands, Snowdonia and the Lake District.
The hikes on a weekend trip move into the mountaineering territory and are generally longer and more challenging than Sunday trips. We make sure all abilities are catered for by offering walks of varied difficulties. We also offer scrambling routes for those who want to get their hands on some rock and have a head for heights!
With incredible scenery, delicious food and great company what more could you ask for in a weekend!
Please Note: Due to current government guidelines we will not be running weekend trips in semester one
Winter Trips
Our two winter trips are held in February, where we travel to Cairngorms and the Glencoe area in Scotland.
With snow and ice comes the need for ice axes and crampons both of which we can provide and our experienced leaders can teach you how to use them. By the end of the trip, you’ll feel like a true mountaineer.
Please Note: Due to current government guidelines we will not be running winter trips for this academic year
Summer and Easter Trips
Our Summer & Easter trips are generally longer (7-15 days) and the destinations vary from year to year. On past Easter trips we have spent time in Snowdonia, the Lake District and backpacking around the Isles of Mull & Arran. In Summer, we have stayed in Torridon, camped in Skye, Glenshiel and Glencoe, and backpacked around the Ullapool and Lochinver regions of the Scottish Highlands.
International Trips
We also do International Summer trips: in the past we’ve done an epic 15 day trip exploring the mountains of central Norway, two weeks in the French Pyrenees, mountain hikes in the Austrian Alps, a two-week trek backpacking through the wilds of Iceland and two weeks camping in the beautiful Swiss Alps.
In 2019, we headed off on our first International Trip outside Europe to Morocco for a week of hiking and scrambling fun!
Gear
There is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing. — Sir Rannulph Fiennes
For everyone’s safety the club has rules on gear that you must have. Please refer to our website for a full & comprehensive kit list (http://www.luuhc.com/sunday-hikes)
We cannot take people on hikes if they do not have the correct gear – it is at the discretion of the committee & leaders on the trip whether you are dressed appropriately and have the necessary gear (i.e. hiking boots, waterproofs, layers, food and drink), but if you follow the advice on the website there shouldn’t be any problems. We will not give refunds to those who come to the hikes unprepared. If you have any questions send us an email before a trip and we’ll be happy to help.

How to Sign up for Trips
YOU MUST BECOME A MEMBER BEFORE YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO SIGN UP FOR ANY OF OUR TRIPS.
Sign up for trips and events takes place online. For Sunday trips, tickets are usually released 1 week in advance (from 8pm on Monday evenings). For Weekend and Winter trips, tickets are usually released 2 weeks in advance (from 8pm on Monday evenings). For Winter trips (and some Weekend trips) there will be an option to come for 2 days or for 3 days – please make sure you select the right option.
** Please refer to the Calendar page of our website, and our weekly emails, for exact release times, dates and costs of tickets for each trip, as there are exceptions!**
There’ll be quite a few options in the shop menu on the union website, so please be careful to select the right trip / product to add to basket. After doing so, there will be a few questions that you’ll need to answer, via drop down menus before you pay. Please pay particular attention to them, but don’t be too slow, as you’re place will not be reserved until you’ve paid.
You can buy tickets here on the Leeds University Union website Hiking ‘Shop’ page at www.luu.org.uk/groups/hiking.
Tickets will be available for 24 hours after their release time, but please note that tickets are sold on a first come, first serve basis, so if you are unable to buy a ticket within the 24 hours, and see the notice ‘purchasing limit reached’ on the union website, they are probably sold out.
If you don’t manage to get a ticket, do not despair! You can email the secretary who can put you on the reserve list and get in touch with you should anyone drop out. To email the secretary to be put on the reserve list, or to ask any questions about sign up for trips, please contact secretary@luuhc.com.
