Our Journey

LUU Strategic Review Cycle
LUU is currently ‘Creating’ their 4-year Strategic Plan… but what does that mean?

In this phase we…
- Review the current plan
- Evaluate the mechanisms of work
- Look ahead, to consider the needs of future students
- Project the financial model
- Use organisational effectiveness, SWOT, and PEST techniques for scenario analysis
- Assess current research and contextual data
- Establish design principles for how we will be successful
In this phase we…
- Talk to our members about what they need from LUU
- Establish the narrative for stakeholders to engage with our review
- Make use of our team of Student Leaders to shape our understanding
- Gain insight from our staff team
- Collaborate with our partners to understand wider stakeholder demands (including the University and established partners)
- Consult with civic leaders and Leeds SUs
- Generate insight from future potential students
In this phase we…
- Review our Vision, Values and Strategic Impacts
- Introduce the “design principles”
- Undertake a large-scale staff consultation as a foundation of work
- Source ideas through engagement with staff and volunteers
- Test priorities for action against emerging scenario for 2022-26, and confirm areas to stop activity
- Create a framework for longer-term objectives using our insight data
- Draft a strategy document for Board approval including clear priorities and defining milestones
- Scope relevant quality models
In this phase we…
- Communicate our objectives to staff, volunteers, and key stakeholders
- Embed organisational reporting and performance indicators for success
- Review and align the internal governance model
- Determine structure, supporting strategies, and resource allocation
- Set out culture and leadership
- Design internal communications
What our stakeholders say
We speak to and survey our staff, students, and partners regularly to make sure we know what they think.
The research we carried out with students across 2021-22 helped us understand what students think about the work that we do and how we influenced their time at university. Take a look at the results from our ‘Tell It Like It Is’ Survey (2021) and further research (2021-2022) below.

How we'll act
During 2018 to 2022 we had three design principles that shaped how we worked at LUU:
- Engaging and including everyone
- Using data
- Making and providing climate friendly choices
We’ve revised these slightly in our new 2022-2026 strategy adding one more to help keep us focused on students. We’ll tell you more soon…
So, what do you think?
Our strategy is a really important piece of work, guiding our direction as an organisation and deciding the values and principles that provide the foundation for everything we do. Naturally, it will have a real and noticeable impact on our members’ time at Leeds – and as a member-led organisation, we’d love for as many students as possible to have their say on how the strategy is working and anything you want us to improve.
If you’re a Leeds student, staff member or another LUU stakeholder, we want to hear from you. Use the form on this page to provide your feedback on LUU or any other thoughts you’d like to contribute as we align our 2022-26 Strategic Plan.
We want to thank our members – you, our students – for your input into our journey and look forward to share more information when its finalised.
