What we’re all about
Music without instruments. Whole scores performed just by the human voice. A Cappella singing has never been more alive and the A Cappella society holds open auditions for anyone who can hold a tune and wants to be part of this extraordinary musical style. They have two groups - the Songsmiths and the Gryphonics - who each fall under their own musical director and both perform regularly around Leeds.
Our auditioned group frequently perform around the University, all over Leeds and across the country at national and international competitions. We also performed a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year, which we are very keen to do every year from now on.
We have two musical directors to lead us, arrange our music, and help us be the best we can be. We also love it when other members of our choir arrange music and contribute their ideas too!
Stay tuned for information about how to sign up for an audition in September 2019
In the past we have performed at various balls and dinners, Union events, the Riley Smith and JCR Awards, the lippy magazine launch, charity events across Leeds, as well as performing at occasional parties and weddings. As a society we are active within the UK A Cappella community regularly competing in and attending events across the country. In 2018, the Songsmiths progressed to the National Semi-Finals of the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCAs). In 2019, the Songsmiths got the National Semi-Finals again and placed 3rd in the UK!
Love the sound of A Cappella but worry you don't have enough time to commit to competitions and regular gigs? Don't worry! The society has an auditioned group called The Gryphonics who meet on Tuesday evenings to practise everything that is great about A Cappella. The Gryphonics is a great way to get involved in group singing at uni and perform at society showcases at Christmas and in Summer.
2018 saw the first annual SNAC (Showcase of Northern A Cappella) where Leeds Uni invited A Cappella groups from universities across the North to perform alongside The Songsmiths and The Gryphonics.
We run auditions at the start of each academic year for The Songsmiths and The Gryphonics; there is another set of auditions for The Gryphonics in January. We hold a fun, free GIAG in Semester One and Semester Two for you to see what being in an A Cappella group is really like!
Keep an eye on our social media for upcoming gigs and events - we can't wait to see you there!
